Common Human Habits that are Bad for Population Health
Population health refers to the health of everyone and so Improving Population Health should involve improving the personal health of individuals. WHne people are generally healthier, so will the entire population health. As humans, we pick up habits and earn bad habits from those around us and these habits lead to un unhealthier populations. For example in countries where smoking is a lot more common a step to Improving Population Health should include programs to try to make people stop smoking and also make public spaces smoking free. Below are some bad habits that humans pick up that could lead to bad health for them.
Spending Too Much Time on the Couch
We all have the habit of slumming on the couch after a hard days work. Even though getting some rest and downtime is good but too much of that and making a habit of doing it too much can be bad for your health. People need to get in the habit of exercising more and moving around as opposed to spending 3 to 5 hours in one position watching Netflix or HBO. People should input exercise into their weekly routine and also some way in your daily routine. Take the stairs rather than the elevator, take a light stroll when you can afford and include small exercise routines into any activity that would allow it. Also, try to stretch every now and then.
Drinking Too Much
Excessive drinking is a social activity that can be easy to take on. Regularly drinking every night and being hungover the next day is bad for your health. Drinking every night of the week or more can be classified as heavy drinking. Doing this every week could lead to serious health issues and just a general unhealthy body. It could also lead to issues with your liver, weight gain and much more things detrimental to your health.
Excessive Use of Electronics
Too much use of electronics is a bad habit and it takes our attention from things that we should be doing. Even worse is using devices excessively before bed. It makes people not fall asleep faster and also makes sleep not as relaxed. People should try to lay off the devices and put the phone away 20 or 30 minutes before bedtime. This will give the brain time to rest and not be too stimulated before you fall asleep and that way you have a more relaxed and deep sleep.
Smoking is one of the major problems of population health. It’s a bad habit and it is difficult to quit. Smoking is bad for the health and lowers life expectancy. It also causes other illnesses and makes your skin look bad. People should try to quit smoking all together instead of taking on electronic cigarettes they are just as bad. They are made with harmful chemicals that do not offer any benefits to the body either. Smoking leads to diseases like heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, other cancers, chronic bronchitis etc. Smoking is addicting so it takes a lot of willpower and determination to be able to quit successfully.
Many people get into the habit of eating unhealthy food that has lasting consequences on the state of their health. A bad diet eventually leads to health issues some of which can be very serious. Eating fast food, processed food, and food with so much sugar, artificial flavoring and chemicals are bad for the body. Food containing trans fat, often found in canned foods and fast food, raises the cholesterol level and blood fats that contribute to hardening of the arteries, as well as firing up inflammation, which contributes to the build-up of fatty plaque in artery walls.
When a population has this kind of habit, it leads to an overall bad population health. Health problems like obesity, heart problems, high-blood, anxiety, diabetes etc start to occur more frequently.
Having a healthy diet has so many health benefits. And some of this benefits are immediate as you start to notice a substantial difference in how you feel. It is advisable to start slowly with something you can manage and eventually make it a permanent lifestyle change. Eating healthy takes some thought and it can be a way to train yourself to be more responsible and more in control of your life.
The key is to start slowly and take on a pace that you can maintain. Many people have a habit of starting diets and then failing at those diets and on and on again and again. This happens when people take on very restrictive diets and try to make big changes to their lifestyle right away. Humans are creatures of habit and a drastic change will only last shortly before we have to fall back into the routine our body is used to.
This is why people must train themselves and their body to gradually master the new routine of a healthy lifestyle. People need to build their lives around eating and exercise patterns that they can keep up with and that doesn’t deprive them of some basic needs. Starvation diets or other extreme diets like liquid only diets etc are not advisable.
